On a crisp autumn day in 2006, I was brought into the world alongside my twin sister and best friend by two loving parents. Since my early childhood, I have been in love with the media arts. I would often take my mom’s iPad to record and edit videos, proudly showing my work off to my family. Throughout elementary, middle, and high school, I continued my video editing journey, trying out different apps and programs and striving to hone my skills.
At the tail end of my ninth-grade year, I was assigned a project centered around future
careers. I was unsure about what I truly wanted, so I took a college major interest quiz to see what piqued my interest. My highest test result was film and video editor. I was pleasantly surprised, but the more I thought back on my childhood, the more the puzzle pieces started to connect. As a young girl with endless free time, I watched cast interviews, behind-the-scenes clips, animation explanations, and much more. I had gone through phases where I wanted practically every job in the entertainment industry. This realization allowed me to solidify my major long before I reached my senior year.
Despite my excitement to begin this new journey at Lamar University, I feel extremely
underprepared to step into the world of film and television. I attended an early college high school, and since the main goal was to simultaneously obtain a high school diploma and an associate’s degree, there was rarely any time for non-academic passions. My school did not offer any media classes that I could become involved in to prepare myself for a life behind the camera. I have a lot to catch up on, but I’m more than willing to learn. My dream is to one day work for Netflix or Disney, and taking this media writing class is just the beginning- a stepping stone in the right direction toward achieving my goals.
